{becoming}

From my earliest memories there has always been an ideal, a story about the princess that I would like to become. I played "prince and princess" with my sister, my friends, my dolls. I don't think I ever had to be taught that I was supposed to grow up to be that princess. But the idea was there, always, ingrained in me before I was even aware of myself. I was subconsciously consumed with the deep-seated longing to grow up into a beautiful long-haired maiden, to fall desperately, hopelessly in love with a romantic and dashing hero, to be swept, both physically and metaphorically off my feet, and to ride off into the glittering sunset of true love and eternal happiness.

And all of those things happened, more or less. I certainly grew up, at least into a slightly less awkward and more stylish version of my childhood self. I met several dapper gentlemen and eventually managed to fall in love with the one who loved me back. He certainly did sweep me off my feet and onto his longboard and ride off with me. We were, and are, in fact, crazy about each other. Madly in love isn’t exactly how I always pictured it to be, but then again, neither is my hair. Disney movies and romance novels are notorious liars, after all.

But then, life went on. I always knew in a sense that life really did continue after marriage. At least I thought I knew that the big white wedding was the beginning of the story, not the end. I had looked forward, as far as I was able, into the misty future and seen a husband with a steady job, a house with a little garden and a prowly cat, and me, barefoot and pregnant and happily surrounded by fat babies for eternity. I had looked no further.

And then all of the unexpected things started happening.

The steady jobs didn’t materialize like they were supposed to. The Air Force took us far(ish) away and opened up new doors and new challenges. The house turned into a major remodeling project and the garden into a mud pit. The cat is actually a dog who eats holes in my couch and throws up in my car. And me? Who had I become? I certainly wasn’t barefoot or pregnant or surrounded by babes and their trappings. And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t make that dream come true. The more I struggled, the more the picture crumbled and I was finally left as I am now: empty and weeping and totally, completely undone.

So what now? I ask myself. What is there to do now? What am I to become in the midst of my shambles? Who shall I be in this strange, unexpected life?

I have focused so hard on the outcomes, the measurable goals and planned future events. And every time I decide, every plan I make, every worry I have morphs suddenly and dramatically into an opposite problem, a totally unexpected decision needing to be made. Not once have things gone as I anticipated. It leaves me shaking and frightened and weak. I’m horribly confused most of the time.

But slowly, slowly the clouds clear. In one tiny space at a time, in one small step after another, I find myself again. Inch by painful, painstaking inch, I am growing.

I am becoming.

I am not who I thought I would be. I am much, much more and I am so very much less than anything I had ever dreamed. This process, this miserable, slow process, with its sudden starts and stops, is what my life is all about. It is about becoming. And I've finally realized that it’s not what I become that matters, but who. Whoever I am meant to be, I will not stop until I have become her. And as the next day comes and the next curve in the road arrives, I will become her all over again.

{just another wednesday}

This week has brought us an icy, frozen storm! With temperatures reaching 10 below, we're huddling up inside with coffee. I am feeling incredibly blessed because we manged to get our heater fixed just hours before the temperatures dropped! As long as it's toasty inside I am enthralled with the magic of the falling snow and frozen temps!
This week is also bringing a visit from my youngest nephew (oh, and his parents, too) and also a lot of re-organizing and re-arranging of furniture! Gotta make room for the Christmas tree! I'm also working a lot trying to catch up from my time off last week and finally getting around to hanging some pictures and painting a few rooms!
How is it that the busier I get, the more I feel I can take on and accomplish? It's some weirdly inverse time relationship that I can't quite seem to figure out, but I'm willing to enjoy the bursts of energy and feelings of accomplishment while they last! I think part of it is just the joy of this season gives me more hustle and bustle than usual!
If you need me, I'll be guzzling hot coffee topped with whipped cream and merrily sweeping the floor in preparation for pulling out all the holiday stops!
Have a happy Wednesday!

oh, hello again

I'm finally back to my normal life after an insanely busy couple of weeks.
We rushed down to Albuquerque to attend a beautiful wedding and then rushed home so that I could grab my sleeping bag and head off on a mission trip with our youth group. We took a group of middle school kids into downtown Denver to paint houses, play with kids, work in food banks, and learn how to serve Christ while serving others.
On Friday my mom (who had followed us back up to Denver the day before) picked me up from the mission trip and took me to a doctor's appointment. Then out to clean my grandma's house for a party. Then straight home to my house, where I hadn't been in a week, to stay with me! My mom, dad, and two younger sisters stayed through Wednesday morning. We had a boating party, went to a football game, shopped, sanded my deck, got facials, ate ice cream, and got together with loads of other relatives.
It was really awesome. I am really tired. In fact, there are a ton of things I'm not even telling you. I'm too tired to even write them.
But now I'm back. I just have to finish staining my deck, get back to the pregnancy center, and do 7 loads of laundry!
Is it just me, or are summer's always the busiest?!

{it was never random}

Today I have my first appointment with a fertility specialist.
I'm nervous.
But the first day of a new month seems to be a fitting time to begin a new stage in the journey.
It isn't random. It never was.
Wish me luck!

{it's raining}

It has been such a wet week in Denver. I absolutely love to sit in my living room and watch the rain pour down outside. It has been so fun to see everything turn so clean and green in just a few short days. I normally love our 300 days of sunshine, but there is something so peaceful and calm about rain. These days are cleansing and soothing for my soul, and if I don't get anything accomplished this week as I'm staring in wonder at the rain, it'll be alright with me.

Happy Monday!

It's Monday again. Also, it's snowing. Again.
I had my interview at the pregnancy center on Friday afternoon. Now to sit back and wait ;)
This weekend we went to our small group Bible study on Friday, and on Saturday I tried acupuncture for the first time! It was actually really interesting and I think I'll probably go back! We also went to see "42" with some friends. What an incredible story!
On Sunday we had church, fertilized the lawn, trimmed some branches, and had a birthday dinner for my grandpapa.
That's about all that's new with me. It's going to be a day of hiding from the cold, folding laundry, and possibly sweeping the floors (my very least favorite chore!).
Hope you had a great weekend!

paint pop

Just a touch a paint and a smear of bravery and these warm, white spaces are set for life with the perfect pop of cheerful color.
I could really use a pop of cheer after spending my entire afternoon on the phone with insurance providers and doctors offices trying to get my follow-up appointment set up, only to discover that they'd already booked me for an appointment this morning at nine and I missed it because no one bothered to tell me. Sigh. Keeping my fingers crossed they can squeeze me in next Monday. Because it makes sense for doctors to only work on Mondays, right?
Hope your day is more productive than mine!

Here I am

Well hello there, faithful friends. I hope you had a laid back weekend!
I'm just sitting here in my bed, my new temporary home. See, on Thursday night I broke my leg and I had to have surgery and spend most of the weekend in the hospital.
I'm doing much better now and hopefully my recovery will go by quickly. I got a splendid (albeit too short) visit from my mom out of the bargain, she came down, cleaned my house, cooked a million delicious meals, cheered me up, and headed back home to her regular duties in about 4 days.
I have been so showered with love from all the people in my life, and I know God has a purpose, no matter what He allows me to go through.
Maybe I'll be swimming in time and inspiration and be a great little blogger for the foreseeable future. Maybe not. Broken Daniella makes no promises.

icy hue

Today I'm still a little bit sleepy, because I hit snooze more than once this morning to finish an interesting dream.
I desperately need to clean my house, do my laundry, and pack my bags before we leave town on Saturday. I also have to buy or make some ugly sweaters for a Christmas party with our youth group, acquire several stocking stuffers for Phillip, survive a soccer tournament, create some activities for my AWANA kids, and hopefully set up some blog posts to entertain you during my time away. Because I'm doing so well at keeping up on the blog front. ;)
For some reason, the cold weather just makes me want to curl up by the fire, watch girly movies, and drink cocoa all day long. Whenever I'm not actively busy, that's where you'll find me.
Here's hoping I can get it together soon!
Meanwhile, just join me in daydreaming about all things teal and blue.

Zen Wednesday: {happy}

This is how I feel about Emily coming to town today.
Now I gotta go sweep the floors so she won't know how messy I really am!
Happy Wednesday!

{to do}

I'd love to tell you about my trip. Really, I would. It was wonderful. Unfortunately, I'm still much too tired for that. Suffice it to say that it was lovely, and exhausting, and pleasant and stressful and delightfully difficult. Hopefully I'll get back to blogging at more regular intervals once I've unpacked, decompressed, and gotten a few more hours of sleep.

dream

                                                                                       Source: highgatedreams.tumblr.com via Daniella on Pinterest

I haven't been sleeping very well the last couple nights. It's not a huge deal, but I must be stressed about something without really knowing it. Last night, I couldn't sleep because I was replaying a few of the day's events in my mind. And when I did go to sleep, this is what I dreamed.
I was climbing a mountain, but things kept getting in my way. Rocks kept falling in landslides, I kept running into people who tried to stop  me or people who I needed to help in the climb. And. AND. The biggest obstacle? Snakes. Every few feet, there were snakes of different breeds and colors and sizes and I had to kill them in order to keep climbing. And you all know how I feel about snakes. SCARY. It was a bad dream.
I finally got out of that dream and slept a bit. But after Phillip got up and before my alarm went off, I had another dream.
It was the day before Brie's wedding. I was trying on every item of clothing in my closet in an attempt to find something to wear. (I have a dress, btw, so this is not a problem. crazy dream.) It took me so long to finally find a dress, that when I came out, I realized I had missed a bunch of the wedding activities, like the decorating and a bridal luncheon of some kind. Oops. Bad bridesmaid. Anyway, I started trying to help, and suddenly, a bunch of us, bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc. were trapped in a room that started to fill with water and strange objects. And we were being instructed by an evil voice. We had to fight our way out in order to survive, Hunger Games style. We were working together, fortunately, and not killing each other. Yet. When I woke up, I was jumping an impossible distance from a ledge on a wall across murky water to land on a raft full of my friends. Weird.
Anyway, I haven't got much else to say. I've had a busy couple days, but the next few should be filled with very little except house cleaning in preparation for my in-laws' visit this weekend and mailing some bridal-shower invitations.
I haven't got much to say, obviously. I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my strange dreams.

Hello, Monday

                                                                                              Source: sarahklassen.com via Daniella on Pinterest

Hello!
I hope you all had an absolutely wonderful weekend! I sure did! Phillip made my birthday really special: we spent all day Saturday adventuring through small Colorado mining towns, over insane cliff-side dirt roads and through rainy forests of aspen and pine. We ran into several antique and thrift stores, stopped for coffee in an old hippie biker shop, and wandered through the opera garden in Central City. We had dinner out, bought a dresser at a consignment store, and even slept in our back yard.
On Sunday my grandparents took the CO family out to dinner at a little cafe in Castle Rock. We had fried chicken and drinks and the most deliciously rich chocolate cake. And I only had to blow out one candle!
Today I avoided all semblances of housework in exchange for finishing up and mailing a friend's wedding invitations. I then proceeded to Hobby Lobby and the thrift store to start on the makings of her bridal shower invitations and decorations! Other people's wedding plans are way more fun than organizing my bedroom.
Tomorrow I'm starting a brand new ladies Bible Study at church, look at me being all outgoing and sociable! ;)
I hope you had a great start to you week!

Happy {birthday} Weekend!

This weekend marks my 25th birthday.
I'm now solidly in my mid-twenties, and I want to meet them head-on:
dangerously, nobly, lightly, frolicsome-ly, improbably, beautifully, and afraid of nothing.
I hope you all have a beautiful weekend!
Don't be afraid to stretch your wings!

Gingham

                                                                    Source: tinywhitedaisies.tumblr.com via Robbie on Pinterest

I've been slightly obsessed with all things gingham lately. I bought two gingham button-ups from H&M recently, in cobalt and kelly, and now I'm thinking of ways to talk my husband into wearing it as well!

Of course, gingham is not just for clothes! I'm really starting to love it in homes as well.
Maybe it's just the springtime talking?
What do you think? Love it or leave it?
Somebody buy me this bedding, pronto!
