Mantle Update
I took some advice from the comments on my post about mantle angst and changed up my mantle decor. I actually did this way back when Tiana was here to help me, but then I broke my leg and basically forgot to take pictures.
Sarah suggested that I treat the long outside parts of the mantle like a bookshelf. She gets major points for even understanding what I was describing, since I didn't bother to provide you with before pictures.
I pretty much used every "pretty" book in my house, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy included. It's not perfect, but it's way, way better than it was before.
Any more good ideas to help my mantle out, ladies?

{sorry, i've been reading}
I am ~so~ close to finishing Anna Karenina.
I feel like there should be a sign above my door, excusing the mess, that says "Sorry, I've been reading." I feel like that would be a perfectly valid excuse if I was visiting anyone else. Sometimes you just have to leave the dishes for later while you find out what happens next and how it all ends.
I can't wait to finish the book, I really want to see the latest movie version of Anna Karenina. The concept of shooting it all inside a giant theater intrigues me.

Happy {gasping for breath} Weekend!
Last night I finally finished Elizabeth Gaskell's first book, Mary Barton.
Wow. I loved it. It is definitely one of my new favorite books.
I'm gasping for breath because of Mary Barton, but also because I'm taking off again this afternoon for a whirlwind trip to Albuquerque to help throw a bridal shower for my future sister-in-law! Every week seems to get busier and whirl by faster and faster, and I'm sort of loving it, but also sort of overwhelmed by the pace.
So stay tuned for some pictures of our awesome Princess Bride themed shower. I am so super stoked about all our plans!

Thursday's Child: Books
One of the greatest gifts ever given me was a love of reading. When my parents (or maybe my sister?) taught me to read, it opened the door to more magic than any trip to Disneyland, any movie, any toy ever could. The ability to use my imagination in combination with the written word is priceless. I love movies, but they almost never live up to the beauty, the glamour, the fun, the excitement that goes on in my own mind when reading a good book. Even bad books (hello, Twilight) are more tolerable as books because my imagination makes up the majority of the story. I could go on and on about the benefits I've received from reading good books. A better grasp of grammar, a larger vocabulary, a never-ending source of conversation, etc. So read your children books! And when they're old enough, teach them. Teach them to read, but also teach them to love books.

It's snowy and blustery outside today, and I'm due downtown to volunteer at the crisis pregnancy center. I'm in for an afternoon of answering phones in a pretty downtown office building and I'm definitely OK with that. Tonight Phillip has class again so I get to spend my evening catching up on my reading. I'm re-reading Adam Bede, because I'll be honest, I didn't pay much attention to it back in high school.

In my {photo story} dreams
There is just something about these two photographs, so romantic and mysterious, that I really love. I want to know what their faces look like, what their stories are, what they're doing and thinking and feeling. Why did they turn their back to the camera? Ok, I think I know, to show off the pretty hair and pretty backs of the dresses! But aside from that, these images evoke emotion, and I dig that.
The girl in white reminds me of Anne of Green Gables, probably because I was supposed to be paying my first (and long dreamed-of) visit to Prince Edward Island this week, and obviously I'm not. The ivory lace and swept-up hair make me think this is just how Anne must have looked in the garden, turned away from Gilbert. I'm pretty sure this glimpse of a soft cheek and peeking eyelashes is what drove him to propose. ;)

Inspired by {books}
I am so sorry I have been absent all week long! I'd like to blame at least the first two days on visits from family. I couldn't blog, I was too busy making jewelry and going to IKEA with my mother-in-law, not to mention bossing my father-in-law around and making him fix all of my broken things.
But they left early yesterday morning, and I have no excuse any more. Honestly, I've just been caught up in a really good book. And I know that you, my lovely readers, can understand that.

Bookish
Have I ever shown you this image before?
I think not. I think I've been hoarding it, hiding it away, keeping it all to myself and staring at it in wonder.
It was time to set it free and let you all share in the delight it brings me.
I almost can't stand it, this image makes me feels so good.
I love the dark, glossy wood floors. I love all the desks and floors and shelves and drawers in this space, and how they contrast so perfectly with the white walls.
But most of all I love that bright, white book room. I love the huge cases with books, the privacy and exposure of keeping them all in their own little windowed room.
If I had access to this space, I don't think I would even want to read the books. I'd just want to sit and stare at the perfection around me hour after hour.
And now you can stare at it, too.

Villette
One of my very favorite books of all time is Charlotte Bronte's Villette
. It is such a fascinating Gothic novel. Some of the most chilling scenes involves the appearance of a shadowy nun, supposedly the ghost of a nun who was buried alive for breaking her vow of chastity. Those scenes literally make me shiver, even though I know what's going to happen.

This picture has that same effect on me, and looks just like I imagined the scenes from the book! Such an eerie image! If you can struggle through the heavy doses of French, I highly recommend Villette
. It's definitely worth the shivers if you make it through this story.

Monday Remedy:
Phillip and I spent all yesterday afternoon wandering through the National Gallery of Art and then skipped through the pouring rain and shared a flowery umbrella. But apparently getting wet didn't agree with me, as my throat is now quite sore and I cannot get warm! So today is a book and cup of tea on the couch kind of day. I hope you had a fantastic weekend and have some time to cuddle up this Monday!
