For the love of {sleep}

This was not the best weekend for sleep. Phillip and I ended up watching 18 month old Lola from Friday night through, well, hopefully tomorrow morning. Her mom had an emergency and her dad isn't back from deployment yet, so we picked her up on Friday afternoon and have been babysitting ever since.
Between some things that happened on Thursday night/Friday morning and having Lola, I have been a sleepless wreck. If you know me at all, you know I do not do well without my 8-9 hours. And tomorrow is shaping up to be a really, really busy day.
I thought this quote by Earnest Hemingway was hilariously true. So if you need me, I'll be napping during every spare moment until further notice. You know, just to keep my life under control.

A simplified list {things that motivate me to work out}

1. Swim-suit season.
3. New work-out gear. I'm currently sporting this awesome bra from Target, and it makes me want to work out constantly! I think I'm going for hot pink next....
4. Not being pregnant. If I can't be happy and fat and pregnant, I will be thinner and stronger than all the girls who are. ;)
5. Being on a military men's soccer team. I gotta keep up with those buff military guys!
6. Counting calories and realizing that, unless I work out, I'll have used them all up before dessert.
7. A hilarious new Dr. Who workout game I invented to make me sweat while watching TV.
8. Seeing people from my past.
9. My pastor and his wife, who are both incredibly fit and like twice my age.
10. Back pain.

And this post wouldn't be complete without some of these:

I'm especially fond of the "dieting all morning" one. I seriously ask Phillip if I'm skinnier yet within minutes of finishing every single workout. And he always says yes. God bless that man.

GIF(t)

This past weekend, we went on a little day trip to Idaho Springs and then up Mt. Evans with Phillip's parents. In case you didn't know, Phillip is a photographer, and he brought along his camera. He's not always the serious, artsy kind of photographer. Sometimes he just follows me around with the camera, snapping THOUSANDS of pictures of me, continuously, until I am driven insane. This is usually the result of me complaining that he never takes any pictures of us or our lives together. Rather than just try a little harder to document our lives in an orderly, fun fashion, he goes overboard. It's kind of his thing.
Needless to say, I'm a bit of a ham sometimes. A lot of the times. Almost always.
My reaction to having my picture taken incessantly is to start doing weirder and weirder things for the camera. Sometimes he'll get a picture that's so ridiculous, he'll stop for a minute!
Anyway. All this to say that today I have a special gift for you. A GIF(t). A lovely looping combinations of pictures Phillip took of me in a coffee shop in Idaho Springs. Enjoy, my friends.
Enjoy.

Today's Thursday's Child post is brought to you by one of my very first loves, Star Wars. I cannot stress how much I love that Darth Vader/Princess costume. I want one just like it!
I think Star Wars has some very good things to teach both parents and children. I plan on immersing my children in the Star Wars culture from a young age, I know they'll be better for it.
May the Force be with you!

Coconut Curry Chicken (and some sister time)

I promised my mom I'd get her my recipe (which is really a rip-off of my friend Shannon's recipe) for coconut curry chicken stir fry. And I figured, if I'm going to be typing it into the computer, I might as well share it with all of you! I love this recipe because it's much more of a Thai curry than an India curry, meaning it's not overpoweringly curry flavored and isn't too spicy.
Here are most of the ingredients (and some banana's. I didn't use the banana's and I don't recommend it).
I started by cutting three large chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and cooking them in organic virgin coconut oil. I sprinkled them with a little salt and lemon pepper and squeeze in a bit of lemon and lime juice.
Once the chicken was cooked, I added the coconut milk and water chestunuts and a little more lemon pepper, salt, and lemon and lime juice. I also added the curry powder. I got my curry powder at Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers. I think I basically picked the cheapest one. I added maybe four tablespoons of curry powder? I'm not positive on any of the amounts, just flavor to taste! I think this time I didn't quite use enough curry, and I may have used too much lemon and lime juice, because it turned out very citrus-y.
I let it simmer like this for a little while because I was waiting for Phillip to get back from the store with the rice, which I forgot earlier in the day. This recipe is incredibly quick to make, so you'd probably want to start your rice before you start cooking this, especially if you're using brown rice, which always seems to take longer. But simmering it works just fine. When the rice was cooking, I added a package of frozen green beans and simmered some more.
When the rice was done, I served it all up and it was quite yummy!
Did I mention that Sophie's here and we went to Goodwill and played dress up? Or that I got used cowboy boots (which I've been wanting forever) for $15?!
Yes indeed. We had a tea party involving berries and cream and earl grey tea and some cute little cookies I got for my birthday. It was oh so glamorous.
Some day she's gonna make one beautiful bride! Watch out, daddy, she's growing up fast!

A Childhood Memoir - Part II

As I mentioned last time, museums were not exactly a favorite pastime of the Neal brood. My parents wanted us to be educated and intelligent vessels of knowledge. But really, it was just a fabulous opportunity for my parents to quench a bit of their own insatiable thirst for knowledge. The real point of home-schooling, I believe, is so that the parents themselves can keep learning. As much as I enjoyed being home-schooled, I think it was really for my mom’s enjoyment more often than my own. But three or four rowdy and irresponsible ruffians like my siblings and me did not yet understand the importance of keeping the teacher happy. We were still young enough to believe that this entire journey of life was intended for our own specific enjoyment. If we were not amused, no one else ought to be, either.

My mom is an extremely complex mixture of sophistication and earthiness. She loves babies, is not afraid to do cartwheels in a dress or dive onto a snow-sled, and yet listens to (and sings) opera, loves fine art, and can discuss politics, religion, and philosophy with the best of them. On this particular day, she was determined to sate her thirst for a bit of sophistication , and to teach her wild young ruffians a lesson or two on propriety, politeness, and art, of course. She therefore took us all into the National Gallery of Art. If you haven’t been there, it’s a huge, formal building of marble with fountains, statues, and fancy floral arrangements. It also has high, echo-y ceilings and docents (or should I say security guards) in every room to ensure that no one disturbs the art by touching it or, as I found out on a high school trip, standing too close.

Now, my mom is not inexperienced as to the amount of patience that resides in four small children. She hurried from room to room, glancing as long as possible at each work of famous art. Now that I look back, I realize just how quickly she was hurrying through the galleries. But hurried or not, it wasn’t fast enough for my siblings and me. We were very decidedly against art. It was practically against our religion, considering that some of it was nude! Frankly, we were bored. And so we proceeded to systematically destroy our mother’s sanity.

We tried everything we knew to convince our mom to take us away from this quiet, boring place and back to our beloved park, where we could be free to run and squeal like the monsters we were. We tried whining, begging, and bargaining, all to no avail. My mother was quite determined to see as much art and soak in as much culture as she possibly could in the short time she had allotted herself.

But we, the Neal children, are not quitters.

Cajoling and annoying was not working. Each time, my mother sternly told us to “Go look at a painting. Find your favorite picture and then I will talk to you, you can to show it to me.”

We began to get rowdier. We whined louder and louder, and tried a quick game of tag. She collard us and lectured us.

“You WILL behave yourselves like civilized people. This is a quiet place. BE QUIET and LOOK AT THE PAINTINGS.”

Poor mom. Didn’t she know who she was dealing with? Whatever anyone might say about us, we were extremely persistent children. We knew how to plug away at a goal with ceaseless diligence. We did not want to be there. We refused to be forced to look at boring art any longer.

We grew louder and louder and more and more contentious. We argued and bickered amongst ourselves. It was a beautiful display of teamwork. One of us would distract her with angry complaining or crying while the others would approach the art and make mocking faces or dances at it. Eventually, the decision was taken out of any of our hands.

A docent approached my mother.

“Ma’am, I’m terribly sorry, but we are going to have to ask you to leave. Your children are just causing too much of a disturbance. I think this one just licked the Monet.”

My mom, cheeks flushed with humiliation and rage, grabbed us all by the arms and dragged us from the gallery. She needn’t have been so rough, seeing as we were all, her excepted, quite willing to leave. Once outside the gallery, we were so delighted with ourselves that we proceeded to run up and down the mall, screaming our joy and cavorting in triumph.

And poor defeated mom, deprived of both her pleasure and her pride in one fell swoop, sat down on a bench, stared at her outrageously ill-behaved persecutors, and hadn’t even the energy to punish us.

She sat, as we flew about in victorious glee, and cried.

Kicking it with Princesses

Today I feel tired and sick and slovenly. I can't get rid of this stupid cold/flu thing, and I just want to kick it with these lovely ladies all day.
I don't know why, but these pictures make me so happy! I seriously smile every time I see them. Just the pick me up I needed to make it through another Wednesday!
Have a great day!
