{thorns}

I pruned my roses today. The bushes were still stubbornly clinging to last year's dead and shriveled leaves. The stems were turning brown and stiff and hard. And so I cut them. Ruthlessly, mercilessly, closer than ever before, I slashed them down nearly to the root.

My grandmother stood over me as I worked, pointing out where to prune. Here. There. No, cut it lower down. She had to reassure me over and over again that I wasn't killing my bushes, I was healing them. And when I finally cut low enough I was rewarded with green, with the revealing of new life. They need to be freed of the weight so that they'll have the energy to grow back, bigger and better than ever, grandmother said. Cut off the dead parts. The new growth runs into the dead and it can't grow any farther.

As I stare at my tiny, pathetic little bushes, I wonder if they'll ever really grow back. And yet I trust her. I trust that her seventy plus years of life have taught her more about roses than I could possibly know. And as I gather up the long branches of sharp, vicious thorns, I wonder again.

I gingerly carry the thorny sprigs across the yard and paused to stare at the cruel points. I picture them bent, tied, and fashioned into a rough crown. I imagine them shoved down in anger and mocking onto a tender brow. I wince. I look at my carefully gloved fingers and then I raise my thorny heart in praise.

I ponder just how much I am like a thorny, sharp, half-dead rose bush. I so desperately need pruning. And Jesus knows. He knows just where I need to be cut, just where I'm running into death and unable to grow.

He knows. And he wades in, bare-handed, and grasps me by my sharpest places. His hands are pierced, my sins cut him deep like thorns. He sheds his own blood willingly, expectantly, joyfully to nurture my deep hurt and need.

Yet when he prunes me, I am the one who cries out in pain. I complain, I gripe, I rail against his loving care of my branches. I angrily tell him how much I needed that comfort, that crutch, that seemingly necessary thing in my life. And he lovingly reminds me, over and over again, to hush. To rest. To allow him to remove the things that are holding me back, sapping my energy, and keeping me from growth.

Why do I trust him so ill? Why can't I obey when I know how great he is, how perfectly he loves?

I wonder. I picture myself, a closely pruned bush. I wait.

Soon I will blossom with new growth again.

{day-dreams}

Some days were just made for day-dreams. Every one of these photographs catapults me into thoughts of adventure and romance. Every one tells a story of long lost hopes and treasures found. Every image is packed with imagination as my fancy takes flight on gossamer wings. If we must have Mondays, let them be filled with day-dreams, please!

Paris {take one}

I want to show you all of my pictures! But that really won't do, there are so many!
We arrived in Paris in the morning, and after a quick bite to eat we rushed off to see as many sites as we could!
 Church near our hotel. There were seriously gorgeous buildings everywhere!
 Notre Dame Cathedral was really impressive. Touring churches may be one of my very favorite activities in Europe.
 Dad napping at a cafe. I swear to you this man can sleep anywhere!
 We walked along the Seine and checked out the oldest bridge in Paris.
 Dad and I outside the Louvre. Thanks random stranger for the pic!
 Love the juxtaposition of old and new!
The one day we left our umbrellas in the hotel room was the only day it rained! We huddled under some trees for a while but then just kept trekking on.
After darting in and out of shops along the Champ de Elysee (famous shopping, but we didn't buy anything, too pricey!) we ate dinner and went to visit the Arc de Triomphe. We climbed the stairs all the way to the top for the most phenomenal view of the city and the Eiffel Tower!
The views were seriously breathtaking.
 The next day we returned to the Louvre. Here's the Venus di Milo.
 There was some seriously impressive Babylonian stuff. Pretty much everything was impressive, actually! We only managed to see about 1/3 of the museum, it was sooo big!
 One of my favorites, Cupid and Psyche.
 That night we went up the Eiffel Tower! We climbed stairs up the first two floors. Oof. We were climbing with a cute French couple who were all dolled up, the girl was climbing the stairs in 4 inch heels! At the top I watched them get engaged! So cute!
The next day we took the train out to visit Versailles!
 I never thought I'd see too much gold in my life, but I may have to admit it was a little...gaudy.
 This hall wasn't gold!
 Just a fancy ceiling or two...or twenty.
 Dad and I in the Hall of Mirrors.
 I believe this was Marie Antoinette's bedroom.
 My favorite part was actually the musical gardens. There was classical music playing throughout the acres and acres of lovely hedges and grass and flowers and pools. So beautiful!
 There were lots of mazes for romantic seductions and political intrigues. I mean, I'm sure that's what they were for, right?
Fountains galore that splashed in time to the music!
And just a simple carriage house that I fell in love with.
We rushed back from Versailles (and almost missed our train!) and were on our way to Brussels!
But I think I'll save that story for another day. Photo overload, much?
Have a fabulous weekend!

{decked out}

When my mom and sisters were visiting, they helped me sand down my deck. Talk about a labor of love. There are chores I don't think I'd ever accomplish if someone weren't around to encourage and help me. My mom bought all the supplies, showed me what to do, and left us with just a wee bit of staining to do and a bunch of pretty flowers to pot (since all of mine had lately died). Phillip and I finished the staining on Saturday and touched it up on Sunday and I not-so-patiently waited until this morning to move our furniture from the back porch to the front. My grandparent's neighbors recently sold their house and wanted to get rid of their staging furniture. I got all this gorgeous stuff for free! Yay! We currently have 3 dogs tearing up our back yard (2 of which we are watching on a semi-permanent hopefully temporary basis) so I needed to get that furniture away from their grubby sleeping bodies and boredom-induced pillow shredding sessions. I want to show you the flowers, too, but I haven't weeded my yard in a shameful number of weeks and it's not pretty. Also I just potted them yesterday and they're not great looking just yet. I cannot wait to drink my coffee out here in the mornings and read books in the shade of our giant pine trees!
P.S. The stain is photographing weird, but it's actually incredibly pretty. We used Cabot's Australian Deck Oil in "Natural" and it is awesome so far.
It feels great to finish a project now and then! Thanks Mom, Lydia, and Sophie!

Fairy Garden Party

Last night I had a big group of lovely young ladies over to make Fairy Gardens. We ate candy. We drank soda. We got a lot of dirt under our finger nails. I got zero shots of the finished product. It was awesome!
Pre-party porch. I tried to make it all feel like fairy land with the hanging lights. I'm not sure the girls even noticed. But I like them!
They each were allowed to plant one tall-ish flowering plant in a hanging pot and then surrounded it with tiny succulents or ground cover. Then they added miniature animals, butterflies, flags, etc to decorate the gardens and make them welcoming to fairies! Our local nursery has a really large selection of miniature plants right now, yours probably does too!
I decorate with weeds. Get over it ;)
There was a very exciting photo-shoot following the garden-making.
I'm just proud that my porch is clean.
Gymnastics, rolling in the grass, hysterical laughter, a few injuries, someone stepping in some hidden dog poop (my bad, girls), and a few really sweet conversations later and it was all just a very hyper dream.
A lot of people use miniature houses, streams, paths, etc. Those fancier things just get pricey when you're buying supplies for large groups. If you want to make one yourself, here is a link to a simple fairy garden tutorial. Or I suggest checking out Pinterest or goolge for ideas. Duh.
Now I need to make one for myself!

{a monday list}

So far today I:

- slept in to make up for giving someone a ride from the airport at 2 AM
- dug weeds in my back yard until my trowel broke in half
- did burpees and various other body-weight exercises that don't hurt my leg
- caught up on five Bible study lessons (shame on me for being so far behind)
- finished off the last of the baked french toast and coffee
- arranged furniture on my back porch in anticipation of tomorrow's delightful party for little girls and fairy gardens
- snuck around my house dripping wet searching for a towel after my shower
- ate yogurt on my back porch with my laptop while the breeze dried my wet hair
- read several chapters of "Eight Cousins"

I really don't know why people complain about Mondays!

A {Fall} love-affair

I'm sorry for my absence, my laptop is still broken and I've actually been enjoying my time away from it all, working on house repairs and messy kitchens and Mansfield Park.
I am also deeply enmeshed in a love-affair with Fall.
I am savoring every crunchy leaf beneath my boot, every scent, every drop of rain, every color and sound and every cool breeze.
I am going on every possible walk through the streets of our neighborhood, which feels so new to me as it is now, covered in huge piles of gorgeous fallen leaves and lit by the golden filtering light through patches of green and yellow and red.
I want to feeze and hold onto every moment of my perfect morning walk to church, of my umbrella softly drumming with rain on an afternoon walk for coffee, and even of my goosebumped, bruised legs as I run through the wind in yet another cold nighttime soccer game.
I want to collect every pumpkin, every fall flower, every gourd and zuccini and bit of plaid that passes. I want to do away with my neighbor's hideous Halloween yard decorations, because they spoil the beauty of the season with so much death and fear. I only want to shiver from cold and wind and rain and the delicious, delightful feeling of another season changing, another end and yet another beginning.
I want to cherish my love affair with Fall itself, as a thing of beauty, as it is such a fleeting, momentary thing, so full and yet so fragile, and so soon to pass away.
Have a fabulous Fall week! Don't forget to notice the beauty all around you!

What I want most on Mondays

I want that porch. I want that rug. I want that hair.
Most of all I want that hammock and an ocean to swing by.

In the garden

Take me away to a world where this little house belongs to me! I personally would fill it with plants, not birds, because right now I have a hankering for a greenhouse, and this would be perfect!

One of my neighbors down the street was selling a greenhouse (sans glass), and I desperately wanted to buy it, but it was just a little out of my league, especially considering its enormous size and the cost of glass.
However, I am absolutely dying over that greenhouse above that seems to be made of recycled windows! I love it sooo much!
If anyone's listening, all I want for my birthday is old windows, please!
Maybe I could be satisfied with an itty bitty greenhouse.
This, perhaps?
