Libraries

When I was a kid, my mom would take me to the library about once a week, usually on piano lesson days. My siblings and I all loved to read, and we would spend hours browsing the shelves, trying to pick out the (I think) 5 books we were allowed to check out each week. Something about the library was comforting and soothing. I think I learned how to be quiet there, although I probably wasn't as quiet as I imagine.
When I was in college, I still loved the library. Zimmerman had several floors with tons of hidden spaces to study quietly (or loudly in a group), tables to eat at and places to meet and chat. Plus, there was a Starbucks inside. I probably went into the library every single day of college. The Starbucks employees knew me by name and often gave me discounts. It was a beautiful relationship. The library was a place for romantic rendezvous, a bit of warmth on freezing days or a cool place to escape from the heat. Becuase of the quiet and peace, it was like a special secret, a moment of calm in the midst of blurring days.
I would love to create the feeling of a library in our study at home. To make it a room that is both peacful and inspiring. A place to relax with a good book and a cup of tea, or to furiously type and study and work uninterrupted while downing coffee to stay awake. I love the look and smell of floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall shelving and ladders and desks. Someday, I tell myself, my house will have a library. And that will be heaven.

  1. sigh....I want one too! With high ceilings...and ladders...I pretty much want the library from Beauty and the Beast...except it might look rather odd in my house. ;-(

I love the ceiling in the second picture!

By the way, I don't think I ever obeyed the 5 book limit. I remember checking out 16 books one day. And reading them ALL that week! Ahh, I miss those days...of course, I checked out 16 books at Zimmerman too, but that was usually cause I had a research paper due!
