{suddenly, subtly}

Fall is here.

It came in subtle shifts, with slightly tilted filtering light, with daily cooler mornings and increasing blankets on the bed.

It came with ferocious swiftness, with torrents of rain and days on end without any sun at all. It came in floods of water and a deluge of sudden sweaters and hot drinks.

It came quickly and yet is coming slowly, with the sweet smells and sounds of falling water and now with brilliant afternoons and the bluest skies and an undefined longing for cold weather and summer's freedom all mixed up and confused inside me.

Everything is confused, in fact. I am filled to the brim with joy and plans and dreamy hopes. I am overflowing with sadness and despair and the sudden sinking feeling that my castles are all made of air.

Fall is here, burning out the year in a flaming whisper. How did we get here, so far from the first hopes of Spring? And yet, what a glorious phase we have before us!

Thanks for sticking with me through my stages of silence.
